TRIPRAYAR: Dr. Varun Menon, an alumnus of Sree Rama Government Polytechnic College, has secured a patent for his innovative Landslide Prediction System. Currently serving as a Senior Engineer in the Research and Development division at Sarathy Geotech and Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd., Dr. Menon’s achievement marks a significant milestone in disaster prevention technology.Reflecting on his journey and the philosophy behind his work, Dr. Varun Menon shared: "I have always believed that engineering, when guided by the right knowledge and intent, can solve even the most complex problems. To me, engineering is inherently multidisciplinary, and while we may not become polymaths like Leonardo da Vinci, we can certainly learn from his curiosity and approach to knowledge.My journey began at Technical High School, Thrissur, and later at Sreerama Government Polytechnic College, Valappad, where I pursued a diploma in Civil Engineering at the age of 15. During this time, I learned an important lesson: I never believed in marks, but in understanding concepts. I still remember receiving my only arrear in Theory of Structures and the disappointment expressed by my teacher. That moment pushed me to improve, and I later scored above 90% in Theory of Structures 2, a subject that remains close to me. I remain especially grateful to Jayalakshmi teacher, Francis sir, Thomas sir, Sarala teacher and all my mentors who shaped my foundation.After completing my B.Tech from Universal Engineering College in 2015, I briefly worked as a rebar detailing engineer before realizing that I wanted to pursue deeper, meaningful engineering work. This led me to pursue M.Tech in Geotechnical Engineering at CUSAT. The 2018 Kerala floods and landslides became a turning point, making me question how engineering could be used to prevent such disasters.With a strong inclination toward hands-on learning, I pursued my PhD under Dr. Sreevalsa Kolathayar at NITK Surathkal, focusing on slope failures and landslide early warning systems. My background has always driven me to engage directly with real problems and understand them from the ground level.Looking back, every stage of my journey has shaped me into the engineer I am today. I do not see my current achievements as final milestones, but as part of a continuous journey of learning and contribution. Above all, I remain deeply grateful to my teachers and mentors, whose guidance has been instrumental in my growth."
